HAVINGA'S SRI LANKAN MISSION MORE THAN JUST A CYCLING EXPEDITION

Tinus Havinga of PSG Konsult is a familiar face in business circles, with or without his cycling helmet. Havinga and his wife Ann are off to Sri Lanka
where he will compete in an UCI World Cycling Tour qualifying event. But his real mission is to raise funds for CycleSafe /SADD, an organisation founded by Bernie Pearce whose husband was killed while cycling. The organisation, established with assistance from Caro Smit and Cathy Doherty-Bigara, aims to raise awareness about the safety of cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians. Havinga’s trip to Sri Lanka is for his own account and all the money raised, will go to CycleSafe/SADD. To this end, Havinga is challenging businesses to support the campaign. In his words, “each year we lose thousands of people in road accidents." The most notable of whom was South Africa’s 2012 Olympic MTB contestant Burry Stander who lost his life while on a training ride.
“Whether you are a cyclist, runner, pedestrian, motorcyclist, car driver or even a passenger - reckless and drunken driving affects everybody. One way to make a difference is to change the behaviour and attitude of all road users.” Havinga explained that Cycle Safe works in conjunction with South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD) to create awareness around the dangers of cycling on South African roads as well as to assist people with helmets and cycling clothes who would not otherwise be able to afford them. He has set himself a target of ZAR50 000 and no donation is too big or too small. The good news is that SADD - as a qualifying Section 18A Public Benefit Organisation, will issue a Section 18A Tax Certificate, entitling sponsors to claim a deduction from your personal or corporate taxable income. To facilitate donations, an online mechanism has been created by means of a secure website to allow for donations by credit card or EFT. Media Statment - The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC)
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) in collaboration with the South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD-NGO) is proud to announce that they will for the first time partner for the iconic Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour taking place on Sunday, 10 March 2013. The collaboration includes cyclists riding to promote road safety during the timed race in Cape Town.
On the day of the race, a team of thirty cyclists will hit the race to raise awareness of cycling safely to motorists, promoting mutual respect amongst road users under the newly road safety campaign by the RTMC, “Get There. No Regrets”. The race will also be used by the cyclist riding for road safety to promote the wearing of helmets by cyclists. SADD is a recipient of a prestigious and worldwide Prince Michael International Road Safety Award. The award was made to SADD in recognition of its national university project which focuses on the youth creating awareness of the harm excessive alcohol use causes to their studies, bodies and on the roads.
This year’s Cape Argus Cycle Tour happens on the backdrop of the passing away of South Africa’s Olympic medallist, Burry Stander, who was involved in a road crash during the Festive Season. Every year in South Africa almost 14000 lives are cut short as a result of road traffic crashes.
“We are extremely proud to be associated with the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour which is an important part of South African sporting calendar and part of Cape Town heritage. We will support all taking part in the tour in support of the campaign to reduce road carnages from pedal to medal.” Said Collins Letsoalo: Acting CEO of the RTMC.

CYCLESAFEKZN GOLF DAY
On the 9th February 2013, CycleSafeKZN, held a Golf Day at Maritzburg Golf Club. The day proved to be a resounding success on many accounts. The Golfers were happy, especially at being well treated by two young lasses from Franki Bananas and in addition by the participation of the great deal of Sponsors who supported the event.
The ultimate compliment of the day came from the management at Maritzburg Golf Club, when I was asked what date CyclesafeKZN, would like to book for next year!
Many thanks go to the people who so ably assisted on the day, the staff at Maritzburg Golf Club, Lesley Hughes, Francis Weedon, Sharon Potgieter, Meg Ward, Bridgette Stegen, Daryn Pieters and Tom Bassage. A huge thank you go to the generous sponsors who either contributed towards the sponsorship of a “hole” and or who donated prizes. Without your generous contribution a day of this kind would not be possible.
The day was concluded by Bernice Pearce who gave a very heart warming, informative address to all the Golfers about the start and ambitions of CyclesafeKZN.
An amount of R17 000.00 was raised, this money will go towards safety awareness on our roads.

BURRY STANDER - South African mountain biking star
“South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD) are horrified to hear of Burry Standers death in a cycling crash and offer our condolences to his family. Motorists have to learn to respect cyclists and to give them the same rights as they do a motor vehicle, and especially to keep a minimum of 1.5 m away from them when passing. SADD have started CycleSafeKZN to try and prevent these unnecessary deaths and ask all to support our cause by joining us on Join Sadd

PE cyclist killed in horror hit-and-run
Young driver arrested after allegedly fleeing scene and driving under the influence Kathryn Kimberley Monday 8.10.12THE Port Elizabeth cycling community is reeling after the death of a cyclist killed by an alleged drunk driver in a horror hit-and-run incident yesterday morning.
Family man and avid cyclistClem Morris died on impact after a blue Toyota Corolla, allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road, smashed into him on the Kragga Kamma Road at about 8.30am yesterday. Morris was flung on to the bonnet of the car.
The driver of the sedan, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, then attempted to flee the scene.
A dramatic police chase ensued.
A suspect, in his mid-20s, was arrested on the Old Seaview Road, about 20km from where Morris lay dead.
A member of Nitrous Security in Seaview executed the arrest.
Based on a breathalyser test, the suspect was allegedly more than two times over the legal alcohol limit, a policeman on the scene said.
The vehicle’s windscreen and bonnet were smashed in.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of drunk driving, culpable homicide and fleeing the scene of an accident.
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Alwin Labans said the matter was still under investigation.
Morris, in his late 50s, had regularly cycled the Kragga Kamma route. His family were in church when the accident occurred just before Welcome Avenue.
“They [family] had to be called out of church to be given the tragic news,” a friend and fellow cyclist said.
The Morris family declined to talk to the media last night. A family friend said they were still in shock.
Meanwhile, the Port Elizabeth cycling fraternity has blasted “inconsiderate” and “irresponsible” drivers.
They said this was the reason more and more cyclists were taking up mountain biking instead.
Tony Cooney, a member of the Masters and Ladies Cycling Club, described yesterday’s incident as a tragedy that should never have happened.
He said it being a Sunday morning most cyclists expected the roads to be quieter.
Cooney said the deaths of cyclists due to drunk or inconsiderate drivers had become totally unacceptable.
Walmer Cycling Club vice- chairman Greg Gouvens said Kragga Kamma Road was a popular training route for cyclists. He conceded that due to the road being narrow and busy, it was also a dangerous route to take.
“The cycling community tries to adhere to the rules of the road as much as possible but motorists can be impatient at times.
“The speed of the vehicle in comparison to the bike, the state of the uneven roads and the potholes make cycling a dangerous sport,” Gouvens said.
“We understand that motorists get upset but what they need to understand is that we always try to anticipate what the driver is going to do. We cannot anticipate what [an alleged] drunk driver will do.”
Hundreds of cyclists also took to The Hub SA, a site dedicated to the sport, to express their emotions just hours after the fatal crash.
'Drunk driver' pokes fun at responsibility
2012/10/12 11:13:41 AM
Johannesburg - An alleged drunk driver accused of killing a cyclist wore a t-shirt to court which pokes fun at responsibility, The Herald Online reported on Friday.
Andre Gouws, 27, was given R5 000 bail in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court.
Gouws allegedly knocked down Clem Morris, a Mill Park chartered accountant on Sunday morning while driving on Kragga Kamma Road in Port Elizabeth. He was allegedly drunk and tried to flee. Morris died on the scene.
Gouws faces charges of murder, driving under the influence of alcohol, and reckless or negligent driving.
In court on Thursday he wore a t-shirt with the slogan: "Cleverly disguised as a responsible person", sparking an angry Facebook debate which called him "arrogant" and "unremorseful".
In his affidavit he apologised to the Morris family. He would be kept under house arrest during his release on bail.

Berg Wheelers Cycling Club. Burg Talk Newsletter 47/2012
"I must congratulate Bernie Pierce, Caro Smit & SADD, Cathy Doherty-Bigara and 4everCycles for their superb initiative in getting this project off the ground. We always talk about safety on the roads for our cyclists but up until now, no-one has done anything constructive about it.
It takes a lot of enthusiasm, initiative, drive and sheer hard work to get a project like this off the ground and deserves the support of ALL cyclists in the City.
As Peter Keyworth mentions in his excellent report below, this was very poorly supported by Burg Wheelers, with none of our top road riders making an appearance. It is sad that our club, which is one of the oldest and largest in the Province has never initiated anything along these lines and hopefully, all our members will now embrace this very important project wholeheartedly." Warwick Weedon.
C group report
"On Saturday there were four C Group stalwarts who participated in the memorial ride for Dr Adrian Pearce organised by SADD and the launch of CycleSafe KZN.
Fran, Leon, Geoff, Mohamed and I joined about fifty other cyclists at 4Ever Cycles at 0600. The ride was well organized with great traffic police marshaling and support vehicles from 4Ever Cycles and Hattons.
A disappointing aspect was the poor turnout of Burg Wheelers members. Cycling safety is of vital importance to all of us and any initiative that promotes this is worthy of support.
The morning was cool but dry and for the whole ride was had great overcast weather.
The participants were of varying degrees of fitness and ability so there were a number of stops for regrouping.
Coming to the main purpose of the ride, celebrating the memory of Adrian Pearce, his wife Bernie said a few words of thanks at the start of the ride. On the ride along the Dards, the group rode slowly past the site of his accident, where there were a number of his family and friends gathered. What a tragic loss.
To me this ride brought sharply into personal focus the vulnerability that we are all exposed to. We rode past the spot where Warwick and I were involved in the accident when he was hit by a passing car. He was unable to ride with us as he has still not fully recovered. We then went past the site where the doctor who had stopped to help Warwick, cycling with the Cycle Lab group on that day, had come off his bike, suffering severe facial injuries. We then went past the Adrian Pearce site. On Pollys we went past the spot where Garth had suffered his heart attack and died a few months ago. The whole experience brought me back to earth and appreciation for what good fortune you have at the moment. We need to be appreciative and responsible.
The group split into two at Umlaas Road, with some heading for Cato Ridge, and the rest of us turning for Pollys and coffee and muffins at 4Ever Cycles.
It was a wonderfully organized ride for a good purpose." PETER KEYWORTH
