World Day of Remembrance

wdor_witness.13.11.09_large

SADD’s WDOR 2009 Project 18,000 shoes for 18,000 people who died on our roads.

This Annual Day is recognized by the UN and it recognizes the loss and suffering of road victims and their families. This day, spearheaded by the charity RoadPeace and held annually on the third Sunday in November, names and remembers the dead and injured victims of road crashes, together with their families, rescuers and relief workers, including fire, police and ambulance personnel, doctors, nurses and counselors. It responds to the great need of road crash victims for public recognition, which is so readily given to victims of other types of disaster. We want this celebrated in S.A. too.

In S.A. 18,000 people die and 150,000 others are seriously injured on our roads each year. Drunk driving accounts for half these deaths. This figure is predicted to rise by 80% by 2020, if it is not tackled head on by all. It costs the S.A. Economy R57 Billion a year.  The price in terms of human loss, grief and care is immeasurable.   We need to be proactive to stop this violence on our roads.
