5 5 children have died on this busy road recently, as well as many adults. The Department of Transport were contacted and they put up calming measures at the pedestrian crossing, as well as repainted and put up a School sign. These are very inadequate - and at the wrong place- and are not best practice at all!
SADD will follow up on remedying this.
SADD teamed up with the US Consul General,Taylor Ruggles, the local Municipal dignitaries and Councillors, Induna’s and the Police walked, whilst Police vehicles offered monitoring.
SADDs Director plus the School Principal, US Consul General and Councillor spoke about road safety.
We held a 1 km LSW along the busy road with about 50 learners actively taking part, another 50 learners watching and approximately 25 adults walking.
Walkers received banners and t shirts, and the observers got reflective backpacks, reflective wrist bands or owl/kitten reflectors.
Donated juice and fruit was handed out to the walkers.

The SADD education Manual was bought by many Schools in SA and by
road safety Officials in Namibia.

GROW SIDEBURNS FOR SEPTEMBER TO ASSIST MAKE A DIFFERENCE-a fun initiative!
Too many young men ( and others) are dying on our roads in SA.
They are not “Accidents” - but are preventable "crashes" most time.
These are not “acts of God”. Most time they are preventable deaths and injuries.
The leading cause of death of the 15 - 29 yr olds is car crashes - and alcohol is involved in 65% of the cases.
Grow sideburns for September and donate any amount (R10/R50 anything you can afford will be appreciated) to a road safety NGO – SADD – that works hard to stop these unnecessary deaths.
As part of the "Decade of Action" we all need to work together to stop these deaths. We cannot just expect "others" to make our roads safe.
We need to each follow and teach our children the rules. Slower, seatbelt use in back and front, sober at all times, no cellphones (even handsfree types distract driving) safe tyres and brakes, slower speeds in rain, safe overtaking, safer rides (no lifts with intoxicated drivers.)
Send your before and after pictures to Contacts- or join the Facebook "Sideburn Septemeber" site and post your photos there.
